Review: Boundless by Brad Cotton

BoundlessBoundless by Brad Cotton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What are the conflicts in this book? Do you change because of who you are or do you change because of where you are? This was the main internal conflict two of the main characters had throughout the story.

Favorite scene …. When they check into the Magnolia Hotel and Ruby insists she can't afford to stay at such a place. This scene was when I realized that this trip wasn't going to be all fun and it was going to be an emotional roller coaster for the reader.

Favorite quote … "You don't have to say anything. I just wanted you to know. When I woke up I wanted to see you, and you were gone. You didn't even say goodbye." - Until the end Duncan and Ashley's relationship was a but confusing to me. Did he need her or was it the other way around? I think this was the best quote in the book to sum up their relationship.

Review: Killer Work from Home Jobs: 200 Fortune 500 & Legitimate Work at Home Jobs by Lee Evans

Killer Work from Home Jobs: 200 Fortune 500 & Legitimate Work at Home JobsKiller Work from Home Jobs: 200 Fortune 500 & Legitimate Work at Home Jobs by Lee Evans
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What did you enjoy about this book? I liked that the author cleared up misconceptions about work at home jobs that promise a lot of money fast. So many want to get rich quickly but they forget about the hard work.

What have you read that is similar to this book? I haven't read any book that focuses on work at home opportunities so this was a first for me and I liked it.

What are some of the major themes of this book? The most central theme was finding legit work at home jobs and what you needed to spot the difference.

Review: How You Leave Texas by Alana Cash

How You Leave TexasHow You Leave Texas by Alana Cash
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What was the author's purpose or purposes in writing this book? Just to write a fast paced easy read that was enjoyable.

What motivates a given character’s actions? Camile was driven to try to earn money to pay her bills on her own. She tried her best to make her own way.

Formatting / Appearance. Did not find any issues with formatting or appearance although would have liked a slightly more professional cover.

Evergreen (A Serial Killer Thriller)Evergreen by David Jester
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Able to connect with the main character and why? Yes, I was able to connect with him. Felt his loneliness and his frustration.

Anyone do something, didn't like and why? Hated that the mom killed all the children to punish the adults. Just so heinous to kill children.

Was location important to the story? The secret community was required but it could happen anywhere in the world.

Review & Excerpt Our Little Secrets (Montana Romance) by Merry Farmer

Our Little SecretsOur Little Secrets by Merry Farmer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Top 3 things I liked about the main character – Willing to step outside her comfort zone, strong, and refusing to allow herself to keep being used by her step-father.

Who do you think the author intended to read this book and why? Anyone who enjoys historical romance with strong, forward characters.

What are the most important relationships in the book? Michael and Charlie learning to trust each other. Without having any time courting, it was hard for them to jump into a marriage and fully trust each other with past secrets.

Chapter One

Charlotte was out of her seat before the train came to a full stop.  She’d had it with the beast.  Thirty-two days of nearly constant travel was more than enough for a woman on her own to withstand.  Especially in present company.

“Ooo!” one of the painted, preening girls packed in the train car squealed.  She knelt on her seat to look out the window as the tiny town of Cold Springs, Montana rolled into sight. “Look at all the men!”

With a roll of her eyes Charlotte grabbed her carpetbag and started for the door. She pushed past the seats full of trollops who leaned out the train’s windows waving handkerchiefs and their bosoms at passersby in the frontier town, eager to get away from them and on with her life.

“Where do you think you’re going, dear?” Miss Helen, their ring-leader, hopped up to follow her.  “The train hasn’t even stopped yet.”

Charlotte ignored the woman.  She’d fallen in with Miss Helen’s lot in Denver, figuring there would be safety in numbers.  It had seemed like a good idea at the time; a good idea she had paid for in the last week as Miss Helen tried to recruit her as a husband-hunter.

Charlotte reached for the door at the end of the car and threw it open as the brakes squealed. The train lurched to a stop.  The jolt sent her and Miss Helen both stumbling out toward the guard-rail at the back of the train.  Charlotte held her hat on with one hand and fumbled her carpetbag with the other.

“Easy there.” Miss Helen’s rouged lips parted in a smile.  “You don’t want them to think you’re too desperate.”

“I’m fine, thanks.” Charlotte did her best to be polite.  The woman had no idea what desperate was.

Miss Helen nodded to her carpetbag.  “Want me to hold that while you-”

“No thanks.”

The station porter stepped forward to offer the passengers a hand down from the train and Charlotte took it.  Once her feet were on solid ground she scurried to get out of the way of the storm of females that were ready to pour from the car.

“Well hello Cold Springs!” Miss Helen trilled over the heads of the curious onlookers, flashing into action. “My name is Miss Helen and have I got a treat for you!  Gentlemen, gather round!”

Miss Helen in her maroon and pink petticoats floated down the train’s steps, as audacious as any queen.  Her painted face and startling red curls only just covered her true age.  When she reached the platform she turned to gesture to the parade of ladies that followed her.

Charlotte took cover in the shadow of the station-house with a wince. A crowd was already gathering.  She had more important things to do than watch the spectacle yet again.

“Gentlemen of Cold Springs, let me introduce you to the finest and most cultured ladies this side of the Mississippi.” Miss Helen spoke above the din of the station in a voice that must have been trained on the stage.  “Fair young maidens come all the way from St. Louis to the frontier with the expressed purpose of making a few of you the happiest men alive.”

One by one the silly girls stepped down into the morning sunlight as if they too were on stage, stifling fake yawns and batting their eyelashes at the growing assembly.

“What, are they whores ‘r sumthin’?” The blunt question was followed by a chorus of rough laughter.

The Kings of Charleston (The Kings of Charleston #1)The Kings of Charleston by Kat H. Clayton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What was the most exciting part of the book. All the different places the name Kythera was found on. Who would have thought?

How did you feel about the main character? She was courageous. Casper was a strong independent young woman.

What did you like about it? This story seemed real. It could very well be a true story and I liked the main character's personal strength.

Review: y1 by Sherrie Cronin

y1y1 by Sherrie Cronin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Did the plot pull you in or did you feel you had to force yourself to read the book? Nothing about this book was forced. I enjoyed every minute of it and there wasn't a single dull moment.

How realistic was the characterization? This reader was able to connect with each character at one point or another. Their experiences may be fictional but their emotions were definitely real.

Did you feel you were experiencing the time and place in which the book was set? Most of the time, yes. The author's writing style was easy to understand and although descriptive, she doesn't use long-winded paragraphs to distract you from the story itself.

Review: Amidst Traffic by Michel Sauret

Amidst TrafficAmidst Traffic by Michel Sauret
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What did you dislike? Trying to figure out how “Rolling Down the Mountain” works with the other stories. I cannot see it and other book club members agreed with me.

Is the title a good one or a poor one and why? Title was simply perfect. We are against the Amidst Traffic of life.

Top things I liked about the whole book. Three Straws and Clouds in the Water. These are my two favourites.

Review: Tainted Waters by Maggie Thom

Tainted WatersTainted Waters by Maggie Thom
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Do you find the characters convincing? I loved the way the characters were brought to life. They were each likable and convincing. Their actions were believable.

How would the book have been different if it had taken place in a different time or place? To a certain extent, a different time would not have made a difference but the location was vital to the story as the lake and the cabin made it more mysterious.

Make a list of facts you learned from the story. Keegan was Mr. Tennison's grandson. He actually owned the newspaper. Sam's dad didn't commit suicide, he was murdered. DD was 15 and she had down syndrome. DD wasn't Sam's biological niece. Sam was fired from her job. She was a newspaper reporter. Mr. Ozz was selling drugs & human organs on the black market. The lake property has been owned by the same three families for over a hundred years. Two cops were working undercover to catch Ozz and his thugs. Ozz ordered several murders, including Sam's dad. Sam's dad was a funeral director.

The Beckoning of Beautiful Things (The Beckoning Series, #1)The Beckoning of Beautiful Things by Calinda B.

What did the title have to do with the book? Title: The Beckoning of Beautiful Things. Daniel is a collector of beautiful items. He spies Marissa and considers her something beautiful that he would like to collect. At first this was a turn off but readers quickly realize they are soul mates and meant to be together.

What are some of the major themes of this book? Fighting evil, sorcery, magic with Marissa finding herself along the way.

Tell five ways the main character is like you. Marissa – strong, go getter, artistic, shy, animal lover

Review: Sex and Death in the American Novel by Sarah Martinez

Sex and Death in the American NovelSex and Death in the American Novel by Sarah Martinez
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Compare two of the characters in this book. Alejandro – almost a carefree person. Knows what he wants and goes after it. Jasper – very serious, always thinking everything thru before acting.

How do you define yourself is a central theme in this story. I can place myself as a bystander or friend to Vivi. Cannot see myself as Vivi. Just do not have the creative writing in me.

Which secondary character resonated most with you and why? Tristian. He is one person that just wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps to create great literature and have everyone talk about him. Sadly, he was not able to finish anything he started. The author portrays him as a person trying to finish a novel and get published, but about half way thru the book readers know a different side of him.

Too Many Secrets (Cleo Sims Mystery #3)Too Many Secrets by Lynn Osterkamp
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What were the main themes of the book? Mystery, murder, finding out secrets

Did the plot pull you in or did you feel you had to force yourself to read the book? I love a good whodunit mystery. This book pulled me in from the beginning. With a little paranormal thrown in, this book gave me everything I want in a mystery book.

Did the book end the way you expected? I knew the murderer would be caught, the mystery part was figuring out who committed the murder.

Summarize the book without giving away the ending.

The book is about addicts’ lives. How low they will go to feed their habit. It was also about, betrayal and denial.

Share a quote or two from the book.

"Oh this is a good one, you look like you were run over by a garage truck."

Favourite location / setting ...

The Sanctuary, because it was so old and beautiful.

Review: Sleeper's Run by Henry Mosquera

Sleeper's RunSleeper's Run by Henry Mosquera
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Using information from the book, rewrite the ending of the book. I would have had Trisha to go after Eric and confess her feelings to him. This was the only thing I did not like about the book.

What did you think was the most interesting part of the book? When Eric learned what had happened to him. You really feel for him and want to know the truth as much as he does.

Did you find this book a quick read? For the book club yes, this was a fast read. We all wanted to know how it ended and we will definitely recommend this book to those who like this genre.

Review: Dissolution Of Peace by Richard Flores IV

Dissolution of PeaceDissolution of Peace by Richard Flores IV
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What do you think the author was trying to accomplish with this novel? Write a war story with aliens which I must say, he accomplished very well.

Tell us whatever you thought. It was fast paced. Putting the aliens in it was a twist. Earth space was a interesting idea.

How did you feel about the main character? Mike was a great guy and definitely someone I want to be around when things go wrong.

Review: Death In Bagheria (A Serafina Florio Mystery, #3) by Susan Russo Anderson

Death In Bagheria (A Serafina Florio Mystery, #3)Death In Bagheria by Susan Russo Anderson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

List the five major events in the story in the correct order. Baroness dies. Serafina is hired to find out if she was murdered. Sister Genoveffa is murdered. Naldo kills his father. The police are brought in.

Consider the ending. Did you expect it or were you surprised? The ending was a surprise and there are no hints in earlier parts of the story. Really good writing.

What lesson did you learn from the story? Locked drawers aren't always the best place to keep something safe.

Forged in GraceForged in Grace by Jordan E. Rosenfeld
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What do you think the author was trying to accomplish with this novel? To make people examine how it feels to be different. That friends can reconnect and be just as close as they were before.

Who was your favorite character? Grace - her courage and strength was astonishing. I was touched by the empathy she felt for other people.

Consider the main character: what does he or she believe in? Grace has to fight for everything. Doing the right thing. Friendship.

What did you think of the main character? The main character was Grace and she just had to keep focused on forging ahead in her life. She left everything behind - her mother, her job.

The Italian Connection 1 (Dojo Boys, #4)The Italian Connection 1 by Alex A. Akira
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

How realistic was the characterization? Yes. It was plausible and the characters were very realistic. The emotions related in the book were strong and at many times touching.

Is the story plot or character driven? It is character driven. Each character sometimes comes across as tormented.

How would the book have been different if it had taken place in a different time or place? This book would not be the same in a different time or place. Emotions may have been the same at a different time but surroundings and acceptance played a big part in the story, so I think things would definitely be different.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If you were in a problem situation like one in the book, how would you have acted? I would have searched high and low to find my father even if it meant risking my life.

Consider the main character: what does he or she believe in? He believes in his country and saving his father.

Which character (s) could you relate to best? I say Michael, his sense of devotion to family and country really made this a wonderful read.
